What are the rules of the game?

The favorite pastime of both children and adults during the Chanukah holiday is to play with a spinning top (in Hebrew: sevivone, in Yiddish: dreidel).

How to play it? The spinning top features four letters of the Hebrew alphabet, each appearing on all four sides.

In Israel the letters are Nun, Gimel, He and Pe, which represent the phrase N es G adol Haya P oh נ ס ג דול ה יה ש ם – a great miracle has happened here .

Outside of Israel, the letters are Nun, Gimel, Hé and Chine, which mean N ès G adol H aya C ham – a great miracle happened there.

The game is played by distributing to all participants either nuts, chocolate coins or candies. Everyone places a coin in the center of the table and one of the participants spins the top.

נ ) If the spinning top stops showing the Noun נ , it does not win, but it does not lose either.

ג) If it is Gimel ג , the player pockets the entire bet and each puts a coin back into the kitty.

ה) If it's Hey ה , take half the pot. This being, in the event of an odd number in the kitty, rounded up to the next higher unit.

ש) If it is Shin ש or the letter Pe פ , d places a coin in the kitty.
